The project was Funded by Ex-49er Quarterback Steve Young’s Forever Young Foundation, and included Recreation Therapy Play Areas, an Adolescent Lounge, and a Rec-Tec Computer Area. The area included exhibits of memorabilia from heroes the children had selected for inclusion.
LPCH patients of all ages and their families are welcome to participate in free play, as well as structured activities such as arts and crafts and games. The “Tech Zone” has video games and computers with Internet access and was designed for teenage patients. The ceiling was painted black, with fiber optic lights in the form of constellations of the night sky and is lit with above ceiling color wheel that make the stars sparkle.
Understanding that play time is an important aspect of a children’s healing environment led to the success of this project.
